Kiln Renting
- Regular FULL Kiln Rental (up to Cone 06) - $100
- Low Fire FULL Kiln Rental (Cone 05 - 01) - $125
- MID-HIGH Fire FULL Kiln Rental (Cone 1 - 6 MAX.) - $150
- You can rent a HALF SHELF (roughly 24” x 12”) for $10 per shelf and a FULL SHELF for $20.
If you wish to fire pieces made at the Art Dept. Studios with clay/glazes from outside the studio, please check in with a studio manager to confirm that it’s compatible with Cone 06 firing.
- Don’t glaze too thickly. The thicker a glaze is applied, the more it will run. If you are unsure, ask a studio staff member. Any problematic glazing (drips/sticks/flaking) will incur a $30 fee
- Cost to use our studio glazes (Mayco Stroke & Coat) is $10 per visit and an additional $10 to have your work dipped in our clear glaze (Duncan - Pure Brilliance).
All work to be fired must be prepaid, any additional shelves needed will be charged upon pick-up.
Our firing schedule is 2-3 Weeks; we will contact you when your work is ready for pick-up.
Open Studio Hours
- Open studio hours are typically as follows and may vary by studio.
- Wheels are usually open time during business hours. Call ahead to ensure availability.
- Monday - Saturday 10:30 am - 4:30 pm
- Sunday 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm
- The last 30 minutes of open studio is reserved for clean-up; If you arrive for open studio within 1 hour of studio closing it does not leave enough time to set up, throw / trim on the wheel and clean up.
- Please note open studio hours are subject to change at any time. Every effort will be made to notify members in the event of a closure or cancellation, but please check our social media and hours for an updated schedule in the event of any last minute cancellations.
New Clay Membership Requirements
- New clay members must take a 4-week wheel class or pass a proficiency test. Proficiency tests must be scheduled in advance and cost $20.00.
- All new clay members must meet with a staff member to tour the studio, review and sign our clay membership agreement prior to working at Art Dept. Studios. Minimum of 14 years old, adult must be present during open studio sessions until 18 years old.
- All clay members are required to have prior ceramics experience, be self-sufficient and know how to use studio equipment.
- Those with long hair please braid it or have it in a ponytail, refrain from wearing rings/bracelets/long necklaces, have on CLOSED toe shoes, and wear clothing you are comfortable getting clay on. It is also recommended to trim your fingernails beforehand, as long nails can make things more challenging. The Pottery Wheel is messy and thankfully clay will wash out, but please come prepared!
- Our studios can get busy and there might be a wait for wheels, so please be courteous and be ready to work before leaving anything on a wheel.
- Pottery wheel access is first come first serve. NO SAVING WHEELS
Clay membership privileges do not extend to other mediums in the studio, such as Glass, Mosaics, and Paint Your Own Pottery.
Clay Membership Fees
- Clay members pay $85.00 monthly or $850 annually (before tax + fees)
- Membership allows members to use the pottery wheels and our studio without an instructor. Includes: 25 lbs Fresh Clay bag ($35 per addt’l bag) OR 50 lbs Reclaimed Clay bag ($0.70 per addt’l pound) and 2 Free Kiln Shelves for Firings ($10 per shelf after/$5 per inch if bigger than 8 inches). Members may use our wide variety of 50+ glazes, and pottery wheel tools for FREE and unlimited open studio hours.
- We also offer a $60.00 monthly membership that does not include clay and kiln shelf space
- A personal shelf to store work/tools/clay is available for an additional $20/month
Membership is not refundable, but you may move it to the next month if you will not be coming in for the month you initially paid for
